Peng Peng yang berusia enam tahun menjadi korban kekerasan domestik dengan pelaku Sun Xiaoqian yang tak lain ibu tirinya. Kesal melihat seprai kotor dan tak mau diam, entah apa yang dilakukan Sun, yang niscaya berakhir dengan kondisi Peng Peng yang ketika dibawa ke rumah sakit menciptakan petugas medis tak percaya.
Laporan CCTV, tujuh puluh lima persen tulang tengkorak Peng Peng retak dengan sejumlah pendarahan otak. Tak itu saja, tulang iganya patah, tempurung lutut hancur, penglihatan tak lagi normal, gigi depan rontok dan lecet di mana-mana. Sejak ayahnya bercerai pada Desember 2015 dan menikah dengan Sun pada Oktober 2016, Peng Peng menentukan tinggal dengan sang ayah.

Namun pilihannya ternyata berujung maut. Peng Peng kerap menerima eksekusi dari Sun. Kepada pegawanegeri wanita muda itu menyampaikan dirinya menerapkan hukum ketat demi disiplin. “Aku juga takut sekali suamiku menganggap istrinya tak sanggup mengurus anak,” ujarnya. Sejak dilaporkan pada kepolisian dan ditahan, kini ia mengaku menyesal.
“Rasanya menyakitkan ketika kusadari saya tak merawat anakku dengan baik. Andai saya sanggup menggantikan posisinya,” ujarnya. Sun juga paham kasusnya kini menjadi perhatian banyak pihak. Peng Peng sendiri semenjak masalah ini terungkap Mei tahun kemudian masih terbaring di rumah sakit dengan biaya per bulan 5,500 yuan (hampir Rp 12 juta) ditanggung donatur.
Pertama diposting via Weibo, informasi mengenai cerita Peng Peng dibaca lebih dari 77 juta kali. Gelombang kemarahan tak tertahan ketika detail penyiksaan mulai terungkap. Misalnya Peng Peng yang menjadi sasaran pukulan bambu sampai diikat kabel dan tali. Kini Sun pasrah ketika pengadilan Linwei District Court di Weinan, Shaanxi, menjatuhinya eksekusi 16 tahun. Meski disambut baik, tak sedikit yang menilai eksekusi tersebut tak setimpal.
